| Our computers can't
do everything. Occasionally we'll need to add a hard drive, memory,
or a CD burner. These are the products I recommend for extending
your computer's capabilities. |

|
| More
Room to Work. There
is nothing more important than making sure your computer has
enough memory (RAM). People frequently confuse RAM with hard
drive space. RAM is the amount of memory your computer has
to run programs. If you don't have enough RAM then your computer
could run slow and you will not be able to do as much as you
could if you had more. I buy most my RAM from Other World Computing
because of their excellent prices. Every Mac with OSX should have
at least 512MB of RAM |

Add
a Hard Drive.
If you're doing video editing with iMovie or have a large collection
of photos, then at some point you are going to need
an external hard drive. The hard drives inside
our
computer
are only capable of holding so much information. This large
Lacie drive is Firewire capable, so you won't lose a USB port,
giving you the expanded, quick storage you need. I prefer Firewire
for its
speed.
Lacie has
an excellent track record
of making
great
products. |

A
Mid-Range Hard Drive. Hard
drive cost depends on capacity, size and speed of the drive.
Many hard drive manufacturers
make full size drives that spin at 5400RPM - not fast enough.
When you purchase a full size hard drive, make sure it is 7200RPM
or higher.
This drive spins at 7200RPM, is Firewire and USB2 and falls
in the middle of the road in terms of price. The OWC's capacity
isn't
as high as the Lacie above, but
not everyone needs a 250Gb
hard drive. Other World Computing makes excellent hard drives.
I like their products.

|
| A Small
Hard Drive. Only 3.5" x 5.5" - perfect
for throwing into a bag.
This 60GB Firewire hard drive doesn't have the capacity of the drives mentioned
above, but the dimensions are very small, making it easy to transport.
If you desire small over bulky and clumsy then this drive is
perfect. It spins at 7200RPM, which is hard to find in a hard
drive this small. OtherWorld Computing is also quite well
known in the Mac world and makes some great products.

| Thumb Size
Storage. Great for little bits of data. Need to take
a file to a friend's computer? Put it on a flash drive! Just
plug this flash drive into a USB port on your computer, it will
pop-up on your desktop. Drag files onto the drive, eject the
drive, slip it into your pocket, get in your car and go! You
can erase files, add more files, use it over and over again.
These
are
great,
very
useful
little devices. They come in multiple sizes. 512MB, 1GB |

| Simple
CD/DVD Burner. Buying a simple CD recorder doesn't make
sense any more. Now you can get DVD recorders really inexpensively
which also burn CDs, giving you much more flexibility. DVD recording
is rated at 16x, rewriting at 4x. This burner is also capable
of burning dual layer DVDs, giving you nearly 8.5GB of storage
on a DVD compared to 4.7GB on single layer DVDs.
This drive
also connects via Firewire, includes Toast Titanium for burning
and will record to CD, which I love! |
|
| Bose Sound
on Your Computer! There are lots of speaker choices
on the market, but none can compare to the Bose Companion 3 Speakers.
The sound that
comes from this system is awe inspiring. You simply plug the speakers
into your Mac's audio-out port and voila! This system also has
a little control pad for adjusting volume and muting. One of the
greatest features on this system is the input jack for hooking
up your iPod! You should see these speakers next to an Apple
flat panel display - beautiful. . . |
|
| Add an
Audio-in Port to your Mac. This product is quite popular.
The iMic is used for connecting a stereo/tape/record player to
your computer so
you can import your music and then record it to CD. The iMic even
comes with some simple software for helping you record from your
tape/record
player. You can also use the iMic to connect regular, high quality
microphones to your computer for narration in an iMovie or even
a Keynote Presentation. |
