So if you were looking for new hardware, what are your best options? I've assembled the best choices below.
Canon 9950F: Buy
Great Photo Scanner. This scanner works great and scans beautifully. I have a couple clients who used a prior version of this model and seem to love it. One of the best features is the firewire connection for quick transfers to your computer. Plus, you don't use up a USB port. The 9950F comes with slides and negative adapters and scans up to 4800 x 9600 dpi max resolution (quite a high resolution). Macworld actually gave this scanner 4.5 mice (of 5 possible). Excellent color capture and fidelity. You won't go wrong with this model, which also comes with Photoshop Elements 2.
Microtek Scanmaker 6100: Buy

Another Great Scanner. Most scanners today do an excellent job at scanning the details, it is the software that is the crutch. Microtek's Scanmaker software is pretty good at making sure your images have good color balance and accurate saturation, etc. I own an older Microtek and it just keeps going! This scanner will also scan slides and negatives and comes with a copy of Adobe Photoshop Elements (3200 x 6400 dpi max resolution). Connection is via USB.

Epson Perfection 2400: Buy
A Simple Scanner. If you don't have the need for anything fancy and just want a scanner for casual use, then pick up the Perfection 2400. For the price you can't get much better. This scanner doesn't scan at the same high quality as the above scanners do, but many people would have a hard time seeing the difference (2400 x 4800 dpi mac resolution). This scanner will also scan 35mm slides if needed. This Epson does not come with Photoshop Elements, which you may want to consider purchasing.
